Part 3 of Board Approved Supervisor training consists of a video submission of a supervision session and written personal reflection that demonstrate and discuss the participants skills in the context of the 6 competencies for supervisors as determined by the Psychology Board of Australia.  The video and written reflection will be submitted electronically to the trainer for review, evaluation and feedback.

The purpose of Part 3 is to assess and evaluate the participants supervisory skills to determine whether they have met the 6 supervisor competencies to the standard required to be a board approved supervisor.


Assessment Part 1: Video of supervision session

Participants will be asked to record a supervision session with a peer or colleague to demonstrate their application of the competencies learned and practiced during the training program. Videos will be required to be 25min – 30min in length and will be assessed on supervision skills demonstrated in the context of the specific supervision session recorded.

Marking for the recorded supervision session will focus primarily on skills associated with the effective supervision and the supervisory relationship and will utilise a 4 point rating scale (Exceptional Performance, Highly Competent, Competent, Fail (Competence not evident)). 

Skills being assessed:

  • Communication Skills
  • Listening
  • Responsiveness
  • Facilitates Case Discussion
  • Provides Feedback

Each of these skills must be assessed as at least “competent” to pass Part 1.

Assessment Part 2: Written Reflection

Participants will also be required to submit an 800 – 1000 word written reflection that discusses their demonstration of required skills in their supervision video recording and also how they have met the 6 competencies for supervisors according to the Psychology Board. 

Marking for the written refection will focus on self-refection on the participant’s performance of competencies within the recording, and discussing their attainment of all 6 competencies required to obtain supervisor status with the Board.  Marking will utilise a 4 point rating scale (Exceptional Performance, Highly Competent, Competent, Fail). 

Skills being assessed:

The participant must reflect on their:

  • Knowledge of and skills in effective supervision practices
  • Knowledge of and ability to develop and manage the supervisory relationship
  • Ability to assess the psychological competencies of the supervisee
  • Capacity to evaluate the supervisory process
  • Responsiveness to cultural and social diversity in supervision
  • Ability to address legal and ethical considerations

The participant must also:

  • Demonstrate insight and understanding in their reflections on their supervision skills.
  • Provide an overall well written reflection, with clear language and logical flow.

Each of these criteria must be assessed as at least “competent” to pass Part 2.

The video and reflection will be required to be submitted within 3 months of completing Part 2 of the training.

Participants may apply for an extension for up to an additional 3 months due to extenuating circumstances or illness by emailing us at with their request. Each application for an extension will be considered on an individual basis.

The trainer will assess each video recorded supervision session and written reflection individually and provide written feedback regarding the submissions, as well as a Pass or Fail result.

Participants who Pass the assessment will be provided with a certificate of completion and will be able to apply for Board-approved supervisor status with the Psychology Board.

Participants who Fail the assessment will be given the opportunity to redo and resubmit their recording and reflection to gain a Pass. 

Participants can submit their final assessment a maximum of 3 times before being required to complete Part 1 and 2 of the training again and then attempt Part 3.
